What Does a Motion Graphics Designer Do?
Think of the animated price tag in a sale ad, the logo that spins in at the start of a YouTube video or the moving charts in a news explainer. A motion graphics designer makes those. The work sits between graphic design and video editing.
- Animated titles, captions and lower thirds for videos and Reels
- Logo reveals and brand intros
- Explainer videos with icons, text and simple characters
- Social media ads and product promos
- Data and chart animation for news, finance and education channels
If you are still deciding between the two fields, read video editing vs motion graphics first. It explains the difference in daily work and pay.
What Are the Steps to Become a Motion Graphics Designer?
- 1Learn design basics
Typography, colour and layout in Photoshop and Illustrator. A frame that looks good still will look good moving.
- 2Learn After Effects properly
Keyframes, the graph editor, shape layers, masks, text animation and tracking. This is where most of your hours go.
- 3Finish videos in Premiere Pro
Clients want a finished video with music and sound. An animation file on its own is rarely enough.
- 4Add 3D elements the modern way
Many motion designers now create 3D-looking objects, text or backgrounds with AI tools, then animate them in After Effects and place them in the Premiere Pro edit.
- 5Make real projects
A logo reveal, a Reel ad, an explainer, a lyric or title sequence, a data animation. Short pieces, finished well.
- 6Cut a showreel and apply
60 to 90 seconds, best work first. Send it to agencies, YouTube channels, ed-tech and brand teams. Freelance work can start alongside.

How Long Does It Take to Learn Motion Graphics?
Most beginners need about 10 months of structured learning and daily practice to become job-ready. That covers design basics, After Effects, editing, sound and a showreel. People who already know Photoshop or video editing often move faster through the first part.
| Stage | Roughly how long | What you can make at the end |
|---|---|---|
| Design basics | 1 to 2 months | Clean posters, thumbnails and title cards |
| After Effects core | 3 to 4 months | Text animation, logo reveals, simple explainers |
| Editing, sound and AI tools | 2 months | Finished ads and Reels with music |
| Projects and showreel | 2 to 3 months | A showreel you can send to employers |
Adobe's own After Effects help pages are a good free companion while you learn[1]. They explain each tool. Practice with feedback is what turns that into speed.
Is Motion Graphics Hard to Learn?
It is not hard, but it is detailed. The first weeks in After Effects can feel slow because there are many panels and settings. Most students find it clicks around the second month, once they start timing animation to music.
You do not need to be good at drawing. You do need patience, a good eye for timing and the habit of practising daily. Students who come from video editing usually enjoy it most, because it lets them do more inside the same projects.
Do You Need 3D Software to Become a Motion Graphics Designer?
Not to start. Most motion graphics jobs for freshers in India are 2D: titles, logos, ads and explainers made in After Effects. When a project needs 3D-looking elements, many designers now create them with AI tools and animate them in After Effects.
Full 3D software is a separate, longer path. Our motion graphics course in Delhi does not teach 3D software. It teaches you to bring AI-made 3D elements into After Effects and finish them in Premiere Pro.
What Do Motion Graphics Job Posts in Delhi Ask For?
We read motion graphics job listings for Delhi NCR on Internshala on 6 October 2026[2]. Three of them, summarised in our own words (company names left out):
- Graphic and motion designer, Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida. About 1 year of experience. Photoshop, Illustrator, Animate, Canva and data visualisation for a finance brand. Pay shown: ₹3 to 3.5 lakh a year.
- AI video editor, Delhi. About 1 year of experience. Uses AI tools to plan ideas and scripts, then builds videos with motion graphics and AI video generation. Pay shown: ₹3 to 3.6 lakh a year.
- Senior video editor, Delhi. About 1 year of experience. Reels and Shorts with After Effects, Premiere Pro and colour grading. Pay shown: ₹3.5 to 4.2 lakh a year.
Two things stand out. Employers mix design, motion and editing in one role. AI tools now appear in the skills list. That is why a motion designer who can also edit and finish a video gets more calls.
How Much Does a Motion Graphics Designer Earn?
| Stage | Typical monthly salary |
|---|---|
| Fresher (first job) | ₹15,000 to ₹18,000 |

| After 3 years | ₹40,000 to ₹45,000 and above |
Pay grows faster than in plain video editing because motion skills are harder to find. Our full motion graphics designer salary in India guide covers senior roles and freelance rates.
Should You Learn Motion Graphics Online or in a Classroom?
Online works if you are disciplined and have a capable computer at home. The hard part of motion graphics is not watching a lesson. It is getting your timing corrected again and again. Classroom or live one-to-one training gives you that feedback faster.
Whichever you choose, check three things: does the course end with a showreel, do you get feedback on every project and are the placement terms written down. Our one to one vs group classes guide explains the trade-offs.
Where Should You Start?
If you already edit videos, start with After Effects and add design basics alongside. If you are new to both, start with design, then move to motion. Either way, plan for about 10 months of steady work.
Our 10-month motion graphics course covers Photoshop and Illustrator for design, After Effects, Premiere Pro, sound and AI tools, with real projects for your portfolio. Premium 1-to-1 students get the written "100% Job Guarantee on Premium 1-to-1"; group training gets job assurance with placement assistance. Full terms are on the job guarantee page.
