How Long Is a Video Editing Course?
It depends on the course type. Search for video editing course duration and you will see everything from a 15-day crash course to a 3-year degree. All of them are real. They just do different jobs.
| Course type | Typical duration | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Short software course | 4 to 8 weeks | People who already edit and want one new software |
| Diploma in video editing (group) | About 4 months | Beginners who can practise a lot at home |
| Diploma in video editing (one-to-one) | About 6 months | Beginners who want a trainer on their timeline every class |
| Advanced diploma with motion graphics | About 10 months | People aiming for higher pay with animation and titles |
| Degree (BSc Multimedia) | 3 years | 12th pass students who also want a university degree |
For most people the real question is not how long the course is. It is: how many months until someone pays me to edit? That is what the rest of this guide answers.
How Many Months Does It Take to Become a Job-Ready Video Editor?
For a complete beginner who practises every day, about 6 months is a fair target. Here is how those months usually go. Some students move faster, some slower. The order matters more than the exact weeks.
- 1Month 1: The timeline
Importing, cutting, trimming, J and L cuts, transitions that do not look cheap. Most of this is in Premiere Pro.
- 2Month 2: Sound and colour
Clean dialogue, music that fits the cut, basic colour correction. Many freshers skip sound. Interviewers notice.
- 3Month 3: Titles and simple motion
Lower thirds, captions for Reels and simple After Effects animation so your edits look finished.
- 4Months 4 and 5: Real projects
Reels, YouTube videos, an ad, an interview edit, an event cut. Real footage, real deadlines, real feedback.
- 5Month 6: Showreel and interviews
Pick your best 8 to 10 projects, cut a 60 to 90 second showreel and start applying.
Between classes, the free official guides from Adobe[1] and the free DaVinci Resolve training from Blackmagic Design[2] are good for revision. They explain the tools. A course adds a trainer who checks your cuts and pushes your speed.

Is a Short Video Editing Course Enough to Get a Job?
Usually not for a beginner. A 4 to 8 week course can teach you where every button is. It cannot give you the 100 or more hours of editing that make you fast. It also rarely leaves time for a real showreel.
A short course makes sense when you already edit on one software and need another, or when you run your own YouTube channel and only want cleaner edits. If your goal is a full-time job, choose a diploma in video editing of 4 to 6 months that includes real projects and portfolio review.

What Do Real Video Editor Job Posts Ask For?
We read fresher video editing job listings for Delhi NCR on Internshala on 6 October 2026[3]. Three of them, in our own words (company names left out):
- Video editor for short AI drama series, Delhi. No experience required. Asks for Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro plus Photoshop and Illustrator. Pay shown: ₹3.5 to 4.5 lakh a year.
- Video editor for a consumer app, Gurgaon. No experience required. Short and long videos for social platforms, with Premiere Pro, After Effects and AI video tools. Pay shown: ₹3.2 to 4.6 lakh a year.
- Video editor, Faridabad and Delhi. No experience required. Also handles camera set-up, framing, light and audio on shoots, then edits in Premiere Pro. Pay shown: ₹3 to 4 lakh a year.
Notice the pattern. None of them asks how long your course was. They ask what software you know and what you can show. Listed pay on job sites is often higher than what many small studios in Delhi actually offer freshers, so use the salary table below as a realistic guide.
What Salary Can You Expect After a Video Editing Course?
| Stage | Typical monthly salary |
|---|---|
| Fresher (first job) | ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 |
| After 1 year | ₹18,000 to ₹22,000 |
| 2 to 3 years | ₹30,000 to ₹35,000 |
Editors who add motion graphics usually move up faster. Freelance Reels and YouTube edits can add to this income from the first year.
Does a Longer Course Mean Better Placement?
Not by itself. A long course with little practice is worse than a shorter one where you edit every day. Before you join any video editing course with placement, ask how many real projects you will finish and get the placement terms in writing.
At CABA the written promise is "100% Job Guarantee on Premium 1-to-1": a paid job or paid internship in the field within 3 months of completing the course and meeting the written conditions, with a minimum of ₹12,000 a month, or the full course fee back. Group training gets job assurance with placement assistance, not a guarantee. The full terms are on the job guarantee page.
