Why Does a Motion Graphics Portfolio Matter More Than Your CV?
A motion graphics designer is hired to make things move well. A CV cannot show timing, easing or how text lands on a beat. A 40-second reel can. That is why most studio heads and agency leads open your link before they look at your marks.
If you are still learning what the job involves, read what does a motion graphics designer do first. This article is about proving you can do it.
How Long Should a Motion Graphics Showreel Be?
Short. For a fresher, 30 to 60 seconds of your best moments is enough. A reviewer may watch only the opening, so put your strongest shot first, not your name card.
- 1Pick your 8 to 12 best moments
Two to five seconds each. Cut anything you would explain with "this part is not finished".
- 2Cut to one music track
Edit the moments to the beat in Premiere Pro. Use music you are allowed to use.
- 3Open strong, end clean
Best shot first. End with your name, role, phone or email and one portfolio link.
- 4Export for phones too
Make a 16:9 version for YouTube or Vimeo and a vertical version for Instagram. Our After Effects settings for Instagram Reels guide covers the export.
6 Motion Graphics Portfolio Ideas for Freshers
| Project | What it proves | Learn it from |
|---|---|---|
| Logo animation for a local brand | Shape animation, easing, sound sync | Logo animation in After Effects |
| Kinetic typography for a short quote | Text timing and rhythm | Kinetic typography in After Effects |
| 30-second explainer for a service | Storytelling, icons, scene changes | Storyboard first, then animate |
| Social media ad in 9:16 | Hook in 3 seconds, safe zones | Reels and Shorts formats |
| Lower thirds and title pack | Clean design for video editors | Reusable templates |
| AI-made 3D product shot animated in After Effects | Modern AI workflow with a human finish | AI image tools + After Effects |
For each project, add three lines: the brief, what you did and the software used. If you used a template or AI-made element, say so. Honesty in a portfolio is noticed.

Worked Example: A Fresher Showreel Plan
Say you have finished six months of training and have eight projects. Here is a simple 45-second plan:
- 0 to 5 seconds: the best moment of your explainer, a scene change that surprises.
- 5 to 20 seconds: two logo reveals and one kinetic typography line on the beat.
- 20 to 35 seconds: the vertical social ad, shown inside a phone frame, plus the lower-thirds pack.
- 35 to 42 seconds: the AI-made 3D product shot, animated and lit to match.
- 42 to 45 seconds: name, "Motion Graphics Designer", phone and link.
Send the reel link in the first line of every job message. Keep the full projects one click away on Behance or your own page.
Where Should You Host a Motion Graphics Portfolio?
- Behance: good for project pages with stills, process and the video.
- Vimeo or YouTube: good for the showreel. Use a clean title with your name and role.
- Instagram: good for vertical work and for being found by local brands.
- Your own one-page website: optional, but it looks serious. A simple page with the reel at the top is enough.
Whatever you choose, keep one short link that opens your reel straight away.

How Does Pay Grow for Motion Graphics Designers?
These are the monthly ranges we see for our motion graphics students in Delhi NCR:
| Stage | Motion graphics designer (per month) |
|---|---|
| Fresher | ₹15,000 to ₹18,000 |
| After 6 months | ₹22,000 to ₹25,000 |

| After 3 years | ₹40,000 to ₹45,000 and above |
A strong portfolio is what moves you up this table faster, because it is what wins the next, better job. Over time, motion graphics usually pays 30 to 40% more than video editing alone. More detail is in motion graphics designer salary in India.
AI and Agentic AI in Motion Graphics Portfolios
Designers now use AI image tools to create 3D-looking elements and backgrounds, then animate them in After Effects and finish in Premiere Pro. Adobe's AI assistant is in public beta in Premiere and in private beta in After Effects[2]. AI voice tools help with scratch voice-overs for explainers.
What the human still decides: the idea, the timing, the brand look and whether every AI element is allowed for commercial use. A note on what was AI-made keeps your portfolio honest. CABA does not teach 3D software such as Blender, Cinema 4D or Maya; our students make 3D elements with AI tools and animate them in After Effects. CABA's courses now teach AI and agentic AI workflows inside the curriculum, with a human check on every output.
