What Is the Difference Between Motion Graphics and Animation?
Think of a 15-second Instagram ad for a mobile phone. The price slides in, the logo pops, three icons explain the features and the offer text bounces at the end. That is motion graphics. Now think of a cartoon where a boy and his dog go on an adventure. That is animation.
Both make things move. The difference is the goal. Motion graphics carries a message: sell, explain, inform or brand. Animation tells a story through characters who act and feel. Technically, motion graphics is one branch of animation, but in jobs, training and daily work they are treated as different careers.

What About 3D in Motion Graphics?
Brands now love 3D-looking product shots and logos in their ads. Full 3D animation needs software like Maya or Blender and long training. Many motion designers take a faster route: they create 3D elements with AI tools, then animate and composite them in After Effects (which can import 3D models in recent versions) and finish the video in Premiere Pro.
That is exactly how our motion graphics course handles 3D. CABA does not teach Blender, Cinema 4D or Maya. We teach AI-made 3D elements animated in After Effects. The full workflow is in 3D motion graphics with AI and After Effects.

Motion Graphics or Animation: Which Should You Choose?
- Choose motion graphics if you enjoy design, typography and brands, want projects that finish in days and want a job within about a year.
- Choose animation if you love drawing characters, can spend weeks on one scene and want to work in studios on films, series or games.
- Not sure? Start with motion graphics. It uses design skills you will need anyway. Many animators also do motion work for clients.
Arts students with a strong hand often do well in both. If you are still deciding what to study after school, see arts courses after 12th for the full list of options.
How AI and AI Agents Are Changing Both Fields
AI can now generate images, video clips and 3D-looking elements in seconds. Adobe's AI Assistant, which carries out multi-step creative tasks from a plain request, is available in After Effects in private beta[3]. Motion designers use AI for first drafts, backgrounds and 3D elements, then animate, time and finish by hand.
What AI cannot decide is whether the motion fits the brand, whether the text is readable on a phone or whether the timing feels right with the music. The designer still makes those calls. CABA's courses now teach AI and agentic AI workflows inside the curriculum, so students learn to direct these tools rather than compete with them.
How to Start Learning Motion Graphics
