What Should a Graphic Design Course for Beginners Teach First?
Design basics. When students join us, many have already watched hours of Photoshop tutorials. They know where the tools are but their posters still look crowded. The reason is simple: nobody taught them how design works. Spacing, contrast, alignment and a clear focus make a design look professional. Software only carries out those decisions.
If you are not sure what graphic designers actually make all day, read what is graphic design first. It explains the main types of design work with examples.
In Which Order Should a Beginner Learn Graphic Design?
- 11. Design basics
Colour, typography, layout, grids, contrast and white space. You practise on paper and simple posters.
- 22. Photoshop
Editing and combining photos, masks, adjustment layers and social media posts. Most fresher jobs ask for it. Our Photoshop undo limit and history settings guide shows the set-up habits studios expect.
- 33. Illustrator
Logos, icons, vector illustrations and print-ready artwork. This is where branding work happens.
- 44. Layout and print
Brochures, catalogues and magazines in InDesign, plus print basics like bleed and CMYK. Many Delhi print shops also use CorelDRAW.
- 55. Quick-design tools and AI
Canva or Affinity for fast daily social posts, AI image tools for ideas and backgrounds, always finished and checked by hand.
- 66. Branding and portfolio
One full brand project from logo to packaging, then a portfolio of 6 to 8 pieces.
How long each step takes depends on the course. Our graphic design course duration guide compares 3, 4 and 6 month options month by month.
What Can a Beginner Practise in the First 30 Days?
- Week 1: copy three posters you like on paper. Note the fonts, colours and spacing. Then make your own poster for a local event.
- Week 2: in Photoshop, make 5 Instagram posts for a tea stall or bakery near you. Same colours and fonts on all five.
- Week 3: in Illustrator, draw a simple logo for that shop in black and white first, then add colour.
- Week 4: make a one-page menu or price list using the logo and posts. Print it and see how it looks on paper.
What Do Fresher Graphic Design Job Posts in Delhi Ask For?
On 9 October 2026 Internshala listed 70 fresher graphic design vacancies in Delhi[1]. Three posts marked "no experience required", in our own words (company names left out):
- Graphic design assistant, Delhi (hybrid). Social media posts, carousels and Reel covers. Skills listed: Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva. Pay shown: ₹2 to 2.7 lakh a year.
- Typography designer at a book publisher, Delhi and Noida. Talks to customers and finalises book layouts. Skills listed: Photoshop, InDesign, MS Word. Pay shown: ₹2.64 to 3 lakh a year.
