Is a Career Change to Graphic Design Possible After 25, 30 or 40?
Yes. We train people every year who come from sales, BPO jobs, accounts, teaching, retail and family businesses. Some are 24, some are 45. Employers look at what you can design, not at your age or your last job title. If you want the wider picture of switching at any age, read our career change at 30, 40 or 50 guide. This article is only about graphic design.
What helps most is honesty about the first year. You start as a fresher, even if you were a senior in your old job. The good news: a designer with real-world maturity usually grows faster than a 19-year-old fresher, because clients trust them sooner.
Which Skills From Your Current Job Help in Graphic Design?
| Your current work | What carries over to design |
|---|---|
| Sales or marketing | You know what makes people buy. That is the heart of ad and social media design. |
| Teaching or training | You explain things simply. Infographics, presentations and explainer posts need exactly that. |
| Accounts or admin | Attention to detail. Print files, sizes and spellings must be exact. |
| Print shop or family business | You already know paper, printing and real customers. Many Delhi print shops still use CorelDRAW too. |
| Retail or customer service | Handling client feedback calmly, which designers do every day. |
How Do You Switch to Graphic Design Step by Step?
- 1Try it for two weeks first
Make 5 social media posts in a free design tool for a real shop near you. If you enjoy fixing them for hours, design is for you.
- 2Learn the core software properly
Photoshop for photos and social posts, Illustrator for logos and vector graphics, plus layout basics. Our what is graphic design guide explains the main types of work.
- 3Learn design rules, not only tools
Typography, colour, spacing and grids. This is what separates a designer from someone who knows the software.
- 4Build 8 to 10 portfolio pieces
A logo and brand kit, a set of social posts for one brand, a brochure, a menu card, a YouTube thumbnail set and one project from your old field.
- 5Start with small paid work
Design for local shops, friends' businesses or your old company. A paid project, even a small one, is strong proof in interviews.
- 6Apply with your portfolio, not only a CV
Send a PDF portfolio or a link with every application. Most hiring designers look at the work first.
How long does it take? Most of our working students finish in 4 to 6 months with weekend or evening classes. The graphic design course duration guide shows what each month covers.
What Do Fresher Graphic Design Jobs in Delhi Ask For?
On 8 October 2026 Internshala showed 68 fresher graphic design jobs in Delhi[1]. Three of them, in our own words (company names left out):
- Graphic designer, Delhi. No experience required. Asks for Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva and Figma. Pay shown: ₹3.6 to 5 lakh a year.
- Graphic designer, Delhi (print and digital). No experience required. Asks for Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Illustrator, InDesign and some video editing. Pay shown: ₹2 to 3 lakh a year.
- Graphic design assistant, Delhi (hybrid). No experience required. Designs social media posts, carousels and Reel covers in Photoshop, Illustrator and Canva. Pay shown: ₹2 to 2.7 lakh a year.
All three say "no experience required". That is good news for a career switcher. Listed pay on job sites is often higher than what many small Delhi studios pay freshers, so use the table below to plan.
What Salary Can You Expect After Switching to Graphic Design?
| Stage | Typical monthly salary |
|---|---|
| Fresher (first job) | ₹10,000 to ₹12,000 |
| After 1 year | ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 |
| 3 years | ₹30,000 to ₹35,000 |
If you earn ₹25,000 today, the first year will feel like a step back. Plan for it. Some switchers keep their job and learn in the evenings. Others freelance on weekends while they learn. Many add motion graphics after the first job: in our experience that brings a hike of around 60% within 6 months. Over time motion designers earn 30 to 40% more than designers who only do static work. The motion graphics course is built for that next step.

Is Graphic Design a Bad Career Choice in 2026?
It is a common doubt, especially with AI image tools everywhere. Our honest view: designers who only resize templates will struggle. Designers who understand brands, layout and print stay busy, especially when they use AI as a helper. Brands still need exact logos, print-ready files and a consistent look across hundreds of posts. AI cannot own that. Our article on will AI replace graphic designers goes deeper.
It is a bad choice only if you expect a high salary in the first year or do not enjoy detail work.
Which Graphic Design Course Suits a Career Switcher?

Fees, timings and the module list are on the graphic design courses page.
