What Should a Graphic Design Course Syllabus Cover in 2026?
Most syllabus pages list software names and stop there. That tells you very little. A useful syllabus shows four things: the subjects, the software, the projects and how you are tested. Here is how a six-month course is usually split, using the module plan from our own graphic design course in Delhi as the example.
| Module | Months | Main subjects | Ends in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Design fundamentals | 1-2 | Design principles, colour theory, typography, composition, Photoshop | Photo manipulation, digital artwork, social posts |
| 2. Vector graphics and branding | 2-3 | Illustrator, pen tool, shapes, logo design, brand identity | Logo, icon set, brand identity package |
| 3. AI tools for design | 3-4 | AI ideation, AI with Photoshop and Illustrator, design review | AI-assisted campaign creative and a module exam |
| 4. Layout and print | 4-5 | InDesign, master pages, Affinity by Canva, colour for print | Magazine layout, brochure, packaging |
| 5. Portfolio and practice | 5-6 | Client briefs, revisions, presentation, freelancing | Client project, portfolio, final exam |
Shorter courses squeeze the same order into fewer weeks. Our guide on graphic design course duration explains what changes when a course is three, six or twelve months long.
Module 1: Design Principles, Colour, Type and Photoshop
The first weeks decide whether your work will look professional later. A good syllabus teaches the elements and principles of design, colour theory and psychology, typography, composition and visual hierarchy. Then it moves into Photoshop: selections, layers, masks, retouching and composite images.
- Check: does the course give drawing or layout exercises before software? Basics without software take only a few days but save months of messy work.
- Check: is typography taught as its own topic? Bad type is the first thing an art director notices.
- Project to expect: a photo manipulation, a digital artwork and a set of social media graphics.
You do not need to be good at drawing to pass this module. Read is drawing important for graphic design if that worries you.
Module 2: Illustrator, Logos and Brand Identity
Illustrator is where logos, icons and brand systems are made. The syllabus should cover vector drawing, the pen tool, shapes and paths, text effects, logo principles and how one logo works across a visiting card, a signboard and an Instagram profile.
For the step-by-step version of the logo project, see logo design in Illustrator.

Module 3: AI and Agentic AI in a Graphic Design Syllabus
In 2026 a syllabus without AI is out of date. Designers now use Photoshop's Generative Fill to extend or clean images and AI image tools to draft ideas. Adobe's AI Assistant, in public beta in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign since June 2026, can carry out several editing steps from one typed request[1]. That is what agentic AI means in design: the tool plans and runs a few steps for you.
What the human still decides: the idea, the brand rules, the final type and colour and whether the output is original and correct. A good syllabus tests that judgement, not only the prompt. CABA's courses now teach AI and agentic AI workflows inside the curriculum, with a human review on every piece.
Module 4: Layout, InDesign and Print Production
Many Delhi jobs still involve print: brochures, catalogues, packaging, flex banners and menus. The syllabus should teach InDesign document setup, text frames, master pages, multi-page layout and colour management for print, along with how to prepare files a printing press will accept.
Our InDesign tips for beginners shows a few of the habits this module builds.
Module 5: Portfolio, Clients and Freelancing
The last module turns classwork into a job-ready portfolio. Look for client briefs, handling feedback and revisions, presenting a design, an online portfolio and interview practice. A real or simulated client project with feedback is worth more than another software tutorial.
Does the Syllabus Match What Delhi Employers Ask For?
We checked Internshala's Delhi graphic design listings on 5 November 2026[2]. Three posts show the pattern:
- Graphic Designer at an advertising agency in Delhi: social media and campaign creatives using Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Illustrator, InDesign and After Effects; 1 year of experience; ₹3.2 to 4.1 lakh a year.
- Typography Designer at a book publisher (Delhi, Noida): no experience required; Photoshop, InDesign and MS Word; ₹2.64 to 3 lakh a year.
- Associate Creative Designer at a Delhi agency (hybrid): fresher job; social posts, carousels and ad creatives with Canva, Premiere Pro and AI image and video generation; ₹2.2 to 2.5 lakh a year.
Photoshop and Illustrator appear in almost every post, InDesign in the print and publishing ones and AI image skills are now listed as job skills. A syllabus that covers all of these leaves no gap. Typical pay as you grow:
| Stage | Graphic designer pay per month (Delhi NCR) |
|---|---|
| Fresher | ₹10,000 to ₹12,000 |
| After 1 year | ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 |
| After 3 years | ₹30,000 to ₹35,000 |
Five Questions to Ask About Any Syllabus
- Which project does each module end in and can I see past student versions?
- Is AI taught as a separate topic or only mentioned?
- How many hours of practice per software, not only lectures?
- Is print production covered or only screen design?
- How is the final exam marked: by a test paper or by real work?
Use these with the visit checklist in graphic design institute in Delhi. If you are joining straight after school, read graphic design course after 12th too.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the syllabus of a graphic design course?
Design principles, colour and typography, Photoshop, Illustrator, AI tools for design, InDesign and print production, then portfolio and client work. Each module should end in a project.
Which software is in a graphic design course syllabus?
Photoshop and Illustrator are the core tools. InDesign covers multi-page layouts. Many courses add Canva or Affinity by Canva and AI tools such as Generative Fill.
How many months does the syllabus take?
A six-month course usually runs five modules of about four to six weeks each. Short courses cover fewer topics in less depth.
Is AI part of the graphic design syllabus now?
It should be. A 2026 syllabus should teach AI for ideas and editing, with a human check on brand rules, type, colour and originality.
Do I need drawing skills for the syllabus?
No. Basic sketching helps you plan layouts, but the course teaches design through software and practice.
