Diploma in Graphic Design: What You Learn, Who It Suits and the Jobs It Leads To

A diploma in graphic design is a skills course. You learn the software designers use every day and you use it on real briefs: logos, social media posts, brochures, packaging and ads. At the end you should have a portfolio that you can show in an interview.

It is different from a 3-year design degree, which adds theory, history and exams. It is also different from a 1-month software class, which teaches buttons but not design. If you are new to the field, start with what is graphic design to see the kinds of work you would do.

A good diploma follows the order in which design jobs use the tools. This is roughly how our students move through the six months:

   Months 1 to 2: Photoshop and design basics

   Photo editing, social media posts, colour, typography and layout rules. Why first: almost every fresher job post asks for Photoshop.

2. 2
   Months 2 to 3: Illustrator

   Logos, icons, vector illustrations and brand kits. Why: clients pay more for brand work than for single posts.

3. 3
   Months 3 to 4: InDesign and print

   Brochures, catalogues, menus and eBooks, with print settings like CMYK and bleed. Why: Delhi still runs on print, from shops to publishers.

4. 4
   Months 4 to 5: Affinity by Canva, Canva Pro and AI tools

   Fast daily content, content calendars and AI image tools with a human finish. Why: agencies want speed as well as quality.

5. 5
   Month 6: Portfolio and interviews

   10 to 15 finished pieces, a PDF portfolio, a Behance page and mock interviews.

Yes. A diploma needs no maths or science background. Arts, Commerce and Science students all join. So do people who finished 12th years ago. What helps is an interest in posters, ads and how things look. Drawing skill helps but is not required: layout and software can be learned.

On 11 October 2026 Internshala showed 67 fresher graphic design jobs in Delhi^[1]. Three of them, in our own words (company names left out):

• Graphic designer, Delhi (print and digital). No experience required. Skills listed: Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Illustrator, InDesign and some video editing. Pay shown: ₹2 to 3 lakh a year.
• Graphic designer, Delhi (products and mockups). No experience required. Work includes product design, mockups and AI product images. Skills listed: Photoshop, Illustrator, ChatGPT and Gemini. Pay shown: ₹2.4 to 3 lakh a year.
• Graphic design assistant, Delhi (hybrid). Social media posts, carousels and Reel covers. Skills listed: Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva and graphic design. Pay shown: ₹2 to 2.7 lakh a year.

Notice the pattern: Photoshop and Illustrator everywhere, print tools in many posts and AI tools starting to appear in the skill list. A diploma that skips any of these leaves you short in interviews.

These are the figures we see for our own students in Delhi NCR. The job posts above show higher numbers for some roles, but plan with the lower figure. The big jump comes when you add motion. Working designers already use AI every day. In Photoshop, Generative Fill extends a background or removes an object. In June 2026 Adobe released an AI assistant (public beta) in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign that can carry out multi-step jobs from a plain request, such as resizing a design for several platforms or running print checks^[2]. Canva AI 2.0 can build an editable first draft from a written brief^[3].

What the human still decides: the idea, the brand feel, which draft is right, the final type and colour. The designer also checks that the file is print-ready. AI drafts. • See real student work, not stock images. Ask for portfolios from the last 6 months.
• Check the software list against the job posts above: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, plus fast tools and AI.
• Ask about batch size. In a group of 20 the trainer cannot watch your screen. In 1-to-1 training they can.
• Read the placement terms in writing. A clear policy beats a verbal promise.
• Visit once. Sit in a class, look at the machines and talk to a current student.
