How to Become a Graphic Designer: The 6-Step Roadmap
- 1Learn the design basics
Layout, alignment, colour, contrast and typography. These rules make the difference between a poster that works and one that looks busy.
- 2Learn the main software
Photoshop for photos, Illustrator for logos and vector art, InDesign for brochures and books, Canva for quick social posts.
- 3Practise on real briefs
Make work for a real shop, a school or a friend's business. Real briefs teach you deadlines, changes and print rules.
- 4Build a portfolio
Choose your best 8 to 12 pieces: a logo, a poster, a brochure, social posts, packaging and one before-and-after edit.
- 5Get your first job or internship
Apply to agencies, print shops, brands and education companies. Many take freshers who show good work.
- 6Keep growing
Add AI tools, motion graphics or web design. Each new skill raises your pay and the type of work you get.

AI and Agentic AI in a Graphic Designer's Work Today
Designers now use Photoshop's Generative Fill to extend or clean photos and Canva's AI tools for quick drafts. Adobe's AI Assistant, in public beta in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign since June 2026, can carry out several editing steps from one plain-language request[2].
What the human still decides: the idea, the brand fit, the facts on the page and whether the result is good enough to print. Clients pay for that judgement. CABA's courses now teach AI and agentic AI workflows inside the curriculum, always with a human check on the final file.
