What Does a Packaging Graphic Designer Make?
| Pack type | What the designer handles |
|---|---|
| Boxes and cartons | Front, back and side panels laid out on the printer's dieline |
| Labels and stickers | Jar, bottle and tube labels with all required text |
| Pouches and wrappers | Flexible packs for snacks, spices, tea and detergents |
| Inserts and outer boxes | Leaflets, thank-you cards and shipping boxes |
| Mock-ups | 3D-looking previews for the client, the website and ads |
Packaging is often the same designer's job as ecommerce images. See graphic design for ecommerce for the online side of the same brands.
Label Rules for Food Packaging in India
Food packs are not only design. The Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 set what a pre-packaged food label must show[1]. The main items include:
- Name of the food on the front of the pack, showing its true nature.
- List of ingredients, except for single-ingredient foods.
- Nutritional information in the required format.
- Veg or non-veg symbol as set in the rules.
- FSSAI logo and licence number in a colour that contrasts with the background.
- Net quantity, retail sale price and consumer care details.
- Batch or lot number, date marking and instructions for use where needed.
The brand gives you the text and checks it; your job is to place every item where the rules say, at a readable size. Cosmetics, medicines and other products follow their own rules, so ask the client for their compliance checklist.
Print Checks Every Packaging File Needs
- Work on the printer's own dieline, on a separate layer.
- Add bleed beyond the cut line and keep text inside the safe area.
- Use CMYK or the agreed spot colours, not RGB.
- Outline or package fonts as the printer asks.
- Check barcodes at the size they will print.
- Ask for a hard proof before the full print run.
Our guide on Illustrator settings for print covers document setup and colour. For press-side work, read graphic design for printing press.

Worked Example: A Spice Pouch Range
Say a small Delhi spice brand wants pouches for six masalas (a hypothetical example). A designer's flow could be:
- 1Collect the inputs
Collect the printer's pouch dieline, the brand colours and approved label text for each masala.
- 2Design one master
Design one master pouch: logo, product name, a colour per masala and a clear front.
- 3Add the legal details
Place the back panel details from the FSSAI list above for each variant.
- 4Make the variants
Make six versions from the master file and proof-read every number.
- 5Export and mock up
Export print-ready PDFs and a set of mock-ups for the website and Instagram.
One master layout with six colour versions keeps the range consistent on the shelf and saves days of work.

AI and Agentic AI in Packaging Design Today
Packaging designers use AI image tools to draft pattern and illustration ideas, Photoshop's Generative Fill to build mock-up backgrounds and AI to make quick colour options. Adobe's AI Assistant, in public beta in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign since June 2026, can carry out several steps from one typed request[3].
What the human still decides: every legal detail, the exact dieline, colour accuracy on the printed pack and whether the AI art is original enough to use. AI cannot check a licence number for you. CABA's courses now teach AI and agentic AI workflows inside the curriculum, with a human check before anything goes to print.
