Why Do Beginners Waste Money on Google Ads?
Google Ads is built to spend your budget. The defaults are set to reach as many people as possible. That is fine for a big brand with a large budget. For a coaching centre in Lajpat Nagar with ₹500 a day, it means paying for clicks from the wrong city, the wrong intent and the wrong sites.
Almost every mistake below is one setting or one habit. All settings were checked against Google Ads Help on 11 October 2026. Google changes the interface often, so if a menu looks different, search the setting name in the help centre.
What Are the Most Common Google Ads Mistakes?
- 11. Leaving search partners on without deciding
In Search campaigns, Google search partners are included by default[1]. Partner sites can bring cheap clicks of mixed quality. Fix: open the campaign's Settings, then Networks. Untick 'Include Google search partners' at first. Turn it back on later if your tracking shows good leads from it.
- 22. Keeping the default location option
'Presence or interest' is the default. It shows ads to people in your area and to people who only showed interest in it[2]. A Delhi institute does not want clicks from someone in Pune reading about Delhi. Fix: under Locations, open Location options and choose 'Presence'.
- 33. Broad match without conversion tracking
Broad match is the default match type for every keyword. Google's own help page says it is critical to use Smart Bidding with broad match[3]. Smart Bidding learns from conversions, so without tracking it is guessing. Fix: set up conversion tracking first, or start with phrase and exact match.
- 44. No negative keywords
If you sell a paid course, searches with 'free', 'pdf', 'jobs' or 'salary' waste money. Fix: add a negative keyword list before launch and grow it from the Search terms report every week[4].
- 55. No conversion tracking at all
Without it you know clicks, not enquiries. Google describes conversions as the actions that matter to your business, such as a purchase, sign-up or phone call[5]. Fix: track form submits, calls and WhatsApp clicks from day one.
- 66. Sending every ad to the home page
A person searching 'video editing course in Delhi' should land on the video editing page, not the home page. Fix: one ad group per service, each with its own landing page.
- 77. Accepting every recommendation
Recommendations often suggest more budget or broader keywords. Some help, some only raise spend. Fix: read each one and accept only what fits your goal.
- 88. Changing everything after two days
New campaigns need time and data. Fix: change one thing at a time and judge it over a full week of clicks.
Why Do Agencies Care So Much About These Basics?
An agency hands a fresher a client's money. The first thing a manager checks is if you waste it. A fresher who sets locations, networks, negatives and tracking correctly on day one gets bigger accounts quickly. One who launches with defaults gets watched closely for months.
Fresher job posts show the same thing. On 11 October 2026 Internshala listed 402 fresher digital marketing jobs in Delhi[6]. Three that ask for Google Ads, in our own words (company names left out):
- PPC executive, Noida. No experience required. Plan and improve performance campaigns. Skills listed: Google Analytics, Google Ads, Facebook Ads, Google Tag Manager and conversion rate optimisation. Pay shown: ₹2 to 3 lakh a year.
- Digital marketing associate, Delhi. No experience required. Search-based advertising work. Skills listed: digital marketing and Google Ads. Pay shown: ₹3 to 4.5 lakh a year.
- Digital marketing support executive, Delhi NCR. Train and support clients on ad tools. Skills listed: Google Ads, Facebook Ads and Instagram Ads. Pay shown: ₹3 to 5 lakh a year.

How Do Google Ads Specialists Use AI and AI Agents Now?
AI is already built into Google Ads. Smart Bidding sets bids for each auction from your conversion data. In March 2026 Google described Ads Advisor, an AI helper inside Google Ads that answers questions in plain language, explains why ads are not running and suggests keywords and headlines[7]. Many specialists also draft ad copy with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
Google's own advice is to review the suggestions and use your own judgement before making big changes[7]. The human still decides the goal, the budget, who to target, which claims are allowed in an ad and whether a lead was real. CABA's courses now teach AI and agentic AI workflows inside the curriculum, with that check built in.
Which Google Ads Projects Should a Fresher Build?
- A local Search campaign plan: keywords, match types, negatives, ad copy and settings for a real local business.
- Conversion tracking on a practice website: a form-submit conversion that shows up in Google Ads and Google Analytics 4.
- An ad copy test: three responsive search ads with different angles and a one-page note on what you would measure.
Worked example (project 1): a bakery in Malviya Nagar wants birthday cake orders. Locations: 5 km around the shop, location option 'Presence'. Network: Google Search only at first. Keywords in phrase and exact match: "birthday cake delivery malviya nagar", [cake shop near me]. Negatives: recipe, free, jobs, eggless cake recipe. Landing page: the cake order page with a call button. Conversion: calls and order form. That one plan, done well, shows an interviewer more than a certificate.

Why Does 1-to-1 Training Help With Google Ads?
Google Ads mistakes cost real money, so it is better to make them in front of a trainer than with a client's budget. In 1-to-1 training the trainer sees your screen while you build the campaign, stops you before you launch with defaults and explains each setting in the context of your own project. You learn at your own pace and repeat the hard parts until they are clear.
Google Ads is one part of our digital marketing course in Delhi, along with content, social media, SEO, GA4 and AI tools. Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most common Google Ads mistakes?
Leaving default network and location settings unchecked, using broad match without conversion tracking, skipping negative keywords, sending all ads to the home page and accepting every recommendation without review.
Should I turn off search partners in Google Ads?
Search partners are on by default in Search campaigns. Many beginners turn them off at first, then test them again once conversion tracking shows which clicks bring real leads.
Which location option should a local business use in Google Ads?
Usually 'Presence', which shows ads to people who are in or regularly in your area. The default 'Presence or interest' also reaches people who only showed interest in the place.
Is broad match bad in Google Ads?
Not always. Google recommends using it with Smart Bidding, which needs conversion tracking. Without tracking, phrase and exact match give beginners more control.
Does CABA Innovatives teach Google Ads?
Yes. Google Ads is part of CABA's digital marketing course, taught on real campaign projects along with GA4, SEO, social media and AI tools.
