Why Do BFA Students Have a Head Start in Graphic Design?
Most design freshers we meet can use Photoshop but cannot draw a clean idea on paper. BFA students are the opposite. You have spent years on drawing, perspective, composition, colour and looking closely at images. That training takes the longest to build. It is exactly what makes a design look considered rather than copied.
Clients notice it too. A café wants a hand-drawn menu. A publisher wants a cover illustration. A brand wants a mascot. These briefs go to designers who can draw. Art students can.
What Does a BFA Usually Not Teach for Design Jobs?
| What design jobs need | Typical BFA training | What to add |
|---|---|---|
| Drawing and composition | Strong | Nothing, keep sketching |
| Colour theory | Strong | Brand colour systems and CMYK vs RGB |
| Typography | Light, except Applied Art | Font pairing, hierarchy, layouts |
| Software speed | Varies | Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign every day |
| Client briefs and revisions | Rare | Projects with deadlines and feedback |
| Print and file handover | Rare | Bleed, resolution, packaging files for print |
BFA in Applied Art already covers advertising and layout, so those students mostly need software speed and a sharper portfolio. Painting, sculpture and print-making students need more work on type and layout. New to the field itself? Read what is graphic design to see the kinds of work involved.
How Can a BFA Student Move Into Graphic Design?
- 1Photoshop first
Scan or photograph your own drawings and paintings, clean them up and turn them into posters and social posts.
- 2Illustrator next
Turn sketches into clean vectors with the Pen tool. This is how hand-drawn logos and icons become client files.
- 3Typography and layout
Learn to pair fonts and set a clear hierarchy. This is the step most art students skip.
- 4InDesign and print
Exhibition catalogues, brochures and book layouts with bleed and print-ready PDFs.
- 5Digital drawing
A tablet or iPad with a drawing app helps illustrators work faster. It adds to paper, it does not replace it.
You can do this during your 3rd or 4th year or right after your degree. Our graphic design course in Delhi lets BFA students skip what they already know and spend more time on software, type and print. Those who cannot travel can join the graphic design course online with live classes.
What Should a BFA Student Put in a Design Portfolio?
- A book or album cover built from one of your own paintings, with type added in Photoshop or InDesign.
- A brand identity for a small café or gallery: hand-drawn logo turned into vector, colours, fonts and a menu.
- An illustrated social media campaign of 6 posts for a real local business.
- An exhibition poster and catalogue for your own college show, laid out in InDesign and ready for print.
- Two or three pieces of pure art, so employers see your hand. Keep it short: design work should lead.

How Do AI Tools Change Things for Art Students?
AI image tools now appear in job posts. Adobe is also rolling out an AI Assistant across Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign that handles multi-step jobs such as resizing designs for every platform or applying brand updates across layouts[2]. Designers use these for drafts, backgrounds and repetitive changes.
This makes original art more valuable, not less. AI can copy a style. It cannot have your idea, your hand or your taste. The human still decides the concept, the drawing that leads the design and whether the final piece is right for the client. CABA's courses now teach AI and agentic AI workflows inside the curriculum, with the artist in charge. See graphic design with AI for a worked example.
Should a BFA Student Do a Graphic Design Course?
If you want a job within months of your degree, a short, practical course is the fastest bridge. Look for one that respects what you already know, gives you real briefs and checks your work one to one. Our guide to the diploma in graphic design explains what a good diploma covers.
CABA's Premium plan carries a 100% Job Guarantee: the terms are on the job guarantee page. Batches, the syllabus and current fees are on the graphic design course page. Love animation more than print? Look at the motion graphics course, where drawing skills help even more.
